Employment Tribunal statistics

Employment Tribunal claims increased by 56% in the year to March 2010 to 236,100, the highest ever level.  Tribunals Service annual statistics show that multiple claims rose 90% from the previous year and single claims rose 14%, but the disposal of cases has not increased sufficiently to prevent a backlog of cases.

Claims disposed of during the year (112,400) consisted of 32 % withdrawn, 31 % settled through Acas, and nearly 13 % successful at tribunal

The most common claim was under the Working Time Directive, followed by unauthorised deductions from wages, unfair dismissal and breach of contract.

Sex discrimination remained the biggest discrimination complaint (excluding equal pay), and the number of discrimination claims across all strands was higher than the preceding year.
