Training and performance management whatever your age

Older workers are often “neglected” when it comes to training and performance management according to a recent survey.

This highlights the need for employers to ensure that they are managing the performance of all employees effectively, particularly in view of the removal of the DRA (default retirement age).

All employees should receive the same formal performance appraisal, at least once a year.  Training should be available equally to all, with age not a criteria.

The survey also highlighted the importance of employers accommodating the physical requirements of older workers, whose physical ability may decline.  Access to occupational health services, offering a reduction in hours, and flexible working, are the most common adjustments made according to the survey.

Government plans to extend the right to request flexible working for all employees will encourage more employers to respond to the needs of employees of all ages and to the needs created by changing demographics in the labour market.”
